Interior of Alexander Church

Code: 50

The Alexander Church was built between 1410 and 1490. The inside will impress you with its beauty. You can enjoy the Gothic style, which represents the late medieval understanding of the world. People believed that the elements of the interior show the relation to god – all the vertical lines point towards God. If you look up you see the ripped vaulting which is both construction and decoration at the same time. The ceiling looks like a ship - that’s why parts of the church are called naves. In the naves there are many figures of apostles, Moses, evangelists and saints. On the left wall you can find a painting of Christophorus, who developed into the patron saint of travelers.
Above the entry is the organ, which was built in 1868 and which is an important historical instrument. Opposite to the organ are the altar and choir stalls. Up in the steeple you can hear the bells. The peal is not in the same condition anymore as in the medieval time. The oldest bell today is the Concordia bell which was a present from Moscow to Schiller’s 100th birthday in 1859.
Since 1996 the church has been fundamentally restored and renovated and is also used for worldly events like concerts or exhibitions.
