Schiller National Museum

Code: 39

Schiller’s National Museum was built in 1901 by Ludwig Eisenlohr and Carl Weigle, who were famous architects from Stuttgart. The building Schillerhöhe 10 has reminisinces of late baroque models, like “Schloss Solitude”. The museum was meant to counter the Goethe museum in Weimar and the hype surrounding it. Opposite the museum you can find a Schiller monument which was built earlier, in 1876, using remelted iron from French canons after the German/French war in 1870/71.
In 1934 the wings were extended. In 2001 and again in 2007/08 the building was renovated and adapted to modern standards of exhibition. The permanent exhibition is about German literature and authors from as far back as 1750 and is accompanied by temporary exhibitions on various literary subjects.
During the 1950s the Schiller National Museum was expanded into the German literature archives.
