Friedrich Schiller is a contemporary of the change from the times of the absolute monarchs to the bourgeois age. Because the bourgeoisie, the well-educated and affluent citizens, were often oppressed by the princes, literature became the medium to convey the increasing self-confidence of the emerging middle class. Schiller knew how to express the feelings of the citizens in his dramas and texts and gave them an understanding of the ideals of freedom. For these texts Schiller was loved by his readers and he is still popular in the modern world.
In 1835 the “Association for Schiller's Monument” was founded by Marbach citizens who wanted to keep the memory of the famous, popular writer alive in his hometown and promote the research in the history of the city.
At first, from the years 1835 to 1840, the association bought Schiller’s birth house. The next step to turn Marbach into the Schiller city, was to lay the foundation stone for Schiller’s monument. In 1876 the monument was finally built.
When these aims of the association were reached, the “Swabian Schiller Association” emerged from the original association. It was founded in 1895, and its official name today is “Deutsche Schillergesellschaft”. The Marbach Schiller Association has continued as a local branch.
