Town Hall

Code: 33

In front of you, you can see the town hall of Marbach. The first town hall in Marbach was built in 1465 replacing a department store and a storehouse for corn. Today’s town hall was built from 1760 to 1763, after the first building was completely destroyed by a fire, which burned down most of Marbach in 1693.
In the middle ages the ground floor was used as a department store, while the rooms for the administration were in the higher floors above the banquet hall. In these times it was also possible to pass through the ground floor with a carriage.
When you turn around, you can see the market street with many beautiful and big cross-timbered houses. In the house with the photo shop a treasure dating back to the 14th century was discovered in 1986. It was one of the biggest coin treasure discoveries in Germany and shows the economic importance of Marbach in the north of the state of Württemberg. However, Marbach significantly lost importance after its serious destruction in the thirty years’ war from 1618 till 1648 and the already mentioned fire.
In front of the town hall there used to be three different fountains. But not at the same time, because the citizens always replaced the old one with a new one. Today there is a fountain with a statue of a fisherman. This fountain was built by refugees after the war.
