Burgplatz

Code: 29

To the right of the Upper Gate Tower, off the Marktstraße and just within the city wall, is a square where there was once a castle.
The square is named after the city citadel, a large building in which various city rulers resided as of around 1190. After the fire in 1693, the building was destroyed and not rebuilt again. Duke Eberhard Ludwig decided to build his new castle, Ludwigs-Burg, a magnificent full-size castle, in what was to become the town of Ludwigsburg. The large space required for a castle of this size was not available in the city of Marbach. The steel structure visible nowadays shows the extent of the fortifications of the old citadel.
Today the square is used to host open air events in the Marbach city centre, such as theatre performances, concerts or open-air cinema.
