Holdergassen

Code: 10

The Holdergassen are 3 parallel roads, inside the old city walls. They are the former district of the manufactures, especially the farmers and vine dressers of the 18th and 19th century. The general poverty of these days – which lasted until the industrialization from 1880 onwards - is thought to be the reason why the Swabians are allegedly reluctant to spend money easily.
Today the Holdergassen are an example for a very successful reconstruction and restoration project, which combines modern standards with medieval looks. Some of the most interesting sights are a typical vine dresser’s house, the brewery which has existed since the 16th century and the cast-iron fountain. Next to the fountain there is house no.4 where the stonecutter Christian Probst lived. You can marvel at his self-portrait set in stone. It was created around 1700 during the reconstruction of his house.
