Goldener Löwe

Code: 04

The “Goldener Löwe” is the birthplace of Schiller’s mother, Elisabetha Dorothea Kodweiß.
Her family had owned this house since 1726. They opened the small restaurant here in the same year. After 15 years, the family added additional space to expand the restaurant. If you look above the entrance, you will see golden lions, the family crest of the Kodweiß family – hence the name of the building. In 1749, Schiller’s father, Johan Kaspar, married Miss Kodweiß, hoping to inherit this beautiful house someday. It can be suspected that Johan Kaspar did not really love his wife but was rather interested in the wealth of the Kodweiß family. However, they were so heavily indebted that the Schiller family was forced to move further up the street (but down in standard), no longer being able to keep the “Goldener Löwe”.
