The Alexander Church

Code: 01

Constructed on a place where there might have already been a church in the late 8th century, the church in front of you was not only a place to worship god, but also a refuge for people and animals in case of an emergency. When the railway was built two towers and the north wall were demolished. Its patron, the holy Alexander, has made the name Alexander very popular in Marbach. There are many legends concerning Alexander’s life: one says he was a Greek philosopher who lived the humble life of a charcoal-burner before he was elected bishop and martyred by being burned alive under the reign of Cesar Marcus Aurelius in 165 A.D.
After the town of Marbach changed hands to the dukes of Württemberg around1302, the Alexander Church was enlarged and reconstructed from the Romanesque to Gothic style.
On the south wall you can find a stone tablet which is turned upside down. This tablet stems from the Roman fort of Benningen, which stood on the other side of the river Neckar. This tablet symbolizes the victory of Christianity over Paganism.
